D-Day Veteran Garth Webb, 93, founder of the Juno Beach Centre in Normandy, France, has died.
When Webb attended the 50th anniversary of D-Day in June 1994 with members of his unit, he was struck by the lack of commemorative facilities at the site where he had landed as a young lieutenant. He decided to do something about it and embarked on a campaign that resulted nine years later in opening of the Juno Beach Centre in Courseulles-sur-Mer, France.
The Juno Beach Centre, which commemorates the Canadian war effort during the Second World War and presents the modern face of Canada to Europeans, is his lasting legacy.
