A groundswell of support has grown in Saskatchewan as communities, businesses and ordinary folks rally around Wounded Warriors Weekend  Aug. 23-27 in Nipawin, Sask.

The brain-child of Canadian country singer Blake Emmons and his business partner Jimmy Chute, the weekend is a way to thank modern veterans who were wounded serving their country, and to give them an opportunity to explore the therapeutic value of fishing—and talking with other veterans.

So far the event has attracted 60 veterans and their families from nearly every province and a smaller number from eight U.S. states.

Dozens of sponsors have stepped forward to fund the event; volunteers, including Legion members, have gotten involved to help Nipawin organize, fund and host the event.

After veterans arrive Aug. 23, they’ll proceed to Nipawin by motorcade, passing through Duck Lake, Prince Albert and other towns.  Fishing along the Saskatchewan River and Tobin Lake is on tap for Friday and Saturday, with golf an added option Sunday.  A formal dinner caps off activities Saturday, while a barbecue and concert are planned for Sunday on the Nipawin Fair Grounds.

The weekend ends Monday, Aug. 27 with breakfast at the Nipawin Legion, then a Cavalcade of Heroes through Tisdale, Melfort and Wakaw.
