Letters From Katherine – Undated Letter

Editor’s note: Undated letter.

Dear Mother,

Well dears we are in Quebec. Will be in Halifax at 1 p.m., but we are due at 7:40 p.m. but I have wired on ahead by the help of the head chief, to Halifax for a hotel for 19. Did I tell you I am in charge of the bunch? Nineteen in all. Some are old enough to be my mother, why far older than you mother dear. I have everything to look after…nineteen tickets…all their documents and baggage checks…if they are sick to look after them and to take them to report on to the Matron in Chief. So do you not think I have my hands full? Oh, if they only keep together.

We are going on a hospital ship… I think, but do not know when we go or what they will do with us. We have a bunch from Toronto…16…and one has developed German measles but she has just been inoculated so think it is the reaction of it.

Oh, that reminds me, some have to be inoculated and some vaccinated on the boat. Oh what a lovely time I have. I just adore being on the train. This suits me fine. The scenery around is much the same as Ontario only much more snow and the farmers do not till the soil like Ontario farmers do.

Well dear, have just gone to see about the meals and have more papers to sign…

The Toronto people are vexed because we are getting ahead of them but the porters are lovely to me and come and get us first to go for meals. They (the Toronto people) think they were on first so should have the first place but I went up and spoke to them so they have been nice since.

Well, heaps of love. Can get stamps at next station.

Katherine
