Arriving In Korea
On behalf of his father Keith who lives in Florida, Allan West shares a couple of photos from his father’s time during the Korean War.
This photo was taken from on board the United States troopship the Marine Adder as she docked at Pusan (now Busan), South Korea. It shows members of an American army band playing musical greetings for the new arrivals. Keith, who was a member of the 25th Provost Detachment [an element of the 25th Canadian Infantry Brigade], says one of the songs was “If I Knew You Were Comin’ I’d’ve Baked A Cake.” Keith also remembers the typhoon the ship weathered on the Sea of Japan.
A stack of Labatt’s beer is a welcome sight for these Canadians in Korea. The men are believed to be Jim Purdy of the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and George Burt of the 25th Provost Detachment.
We thank Allan and Keith for sharing these photos and the memories. If you have something to share, please send it to magazine@legion.ca or mail it to Find-Share-Discuss, Legion Magazine, 86 Aird Place, Kanata, ON, K2L 0A1
