NOVEMBER 11, 2010: For the first time, Canadians commemorate Remembrance Day without a Canadian First World War veteran. Canada’s last surviving veteran of the war was John Babcock.

NOVEMBER 12, 1982: Polish Solidarity movement leader Lech Walesa is freed after months in prison. For some, his release is seen as the beginning of the end of martial law in Poland.

NOVEMBER 13, 1985: As many as 20,000 people are feared dead following a volcanic eruption in Colombia.

NOVEMBER 14, 1940: A German air raid devastates Coventry, England.

NOVEMBER 15, 1998: An American and British bombing mission is called back after Iraq agrees to allow UN weapons inspectors into the country.

NOVEMBER 16, 1941: The Royal Canadian Navy armed merchant cruiser Prince Robert arrives at Hong Kong, escorting the troopship Awatea carrying the Winnipeg Grenadiers and the Royal Rifles of Canada.

NOVEMBER 20, 1945: Several Nazi leaders stand trial in Nuremberg, Germany.

NOVEMBER 21, 1950: A westbound train carrying soldiers to training and eventual embarkation for the war in Korea collides with an eastbound train near Canoe River, B.C. Twelve soldiers died at the scene and more die later. All are members of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery.
