#10 Canadian Stationary Hospital

Dear Miss Delmage,

I regret to tell you that Nursing Sister Katherine Mary Maud MacDonald was killed in the Air Raid 19/5/18.

The femoral artery was severed by a piece of shrapnel and the bleeding and shock killed her.

We were talking only Saturday about your unit. I expected her to leave any day and she was looking forward to seeing you all. She had missed you very much but told she liked working with Sister Beck in “D”.

Poor little soul, she did not suffer long, death came very soon, unlike our other two sisters, one of whom died yesterday, and the other still suffering.

Sister MacDonald’s funeral was a wonderful sight. The flowers were beautiful, the Sisters lined her grave with white and purple lilacs and pink peonies and all the hospitals sent flowers.

About 100 Canadian Sisters followed, among them 7 Generals, 7 Stationary and 9 Stationary British Sisters, American and…all the D staff and other officers of the area.

I am telling you these details so you may tell her people and if there is a photo of it I will send it to you for them.

Her effects will be sent in the usual way through Q.M. like the officers and men.

It was a terrible night. It’s only a God’s mercy that any of the Sisters were saved. They simply hammered at us for hours it seemed.

Pardon this scribble and forgive my not writing before but I understood Miss Ridley would write you on receipt of our news. If you want to know any more do write me and I shall be glad to tell you.
