Letters From Bill – Dec. 19, 1943.

Dear Mum, Dad, Bette and “Commando Jack”:

This is the first chance I have had to write since we left camp last Monday…. Mum, it sure was sure good to see your writing again. I noticed it was a little shaky, but I know you are much better now…. Well, we are a way up in Scotland and as I said in my other letters we are as far away from civilization as it is possible to get. Just fifteen hours from Norway by water. We left Monday afternoon and arrived Tuesday—22 hours to go 250 miles…. I can see now why they call these places the Highlands. The hills are really high. Most of them are covered with mist. The country is very pretty, but when we have to climb them (the hills) we sure don’t admire the beauty…. The training has been real tough and everybody has to do it. We go on these assault craft, sail out into the loch then make a landing, jumping off in water to your middle then run up these high hills. It sure is tough and we all got colds, including me, and today I broke my record. I went on sick parade for the first time since I got in ‘this man’s army.’

…I will write again if I get a chance or as soon as I get back to camp. Don’t forget to obey the doctor’s orders…. Hope you have the best Christmas ever folks, and Santa be good to you all….

Lots of Love to all,

Bill
