Letters From Bill – Sunday, April 2, 1944

Dear Mum, Dad, Sis and Jack the Commando:

Have a few minutes to myself so thought I would drop you a line or two. As I told you in my last letter we were going on a scheme, well this is it. We left camp yesterday morning and arrived in the bush where we are now late in the afternoon. I am with B.O.R. this scheme and ride in the back of a truck which is sure a lot better than marching or even a bicycle. Our office is the back of a truck and it sure is crowded with five fellows working in here at once besides all our equipment and orderly room stuff. The scheme does not actually start until tonight but we have to be in position, the reason for us leaving yesterday….

Last night as was expected it rained but I made my bed under the back of the truck and let the tailgate down and it was really OK. Not very much room but dry which is the main thing. One of the fellows got real wet, blankets and all and he is rather down in the dumps today but can’t be blamed. We were only allowed to take two blankets and a great coat but I took four and my great coat so wasn’t too cold. It is still a little chilly to be sleeping out but evidently the generals who run this Army don’t think so but then they don’t have to sleep out….

Right now I am perched up in the truck so if there are too many mistakes blame it on the conditions. Talk about a cold shave this morning, it was really wonderful in a way. The razor was just bouncing off the whiskers.

We have been eating pretty good since coming here but it can’t last. We stopped for a few minutes in a small town on the way here and we were lucky enough to buy a loaf of bread. That is the only thing we can get without coupons but it tastes pretty good after missing a couple of meals. If we get near a farmhouse I am going to try and buy a few eggs, the old fashioned kind with the shells, not the new powdered kind. I have only had a few of those since coming over.…

All the best in the world to the swellest folks a fellow ever had.

Lots of Love to All,

Bill
