William J. Breen of Oyama, B.C., says a Newfoundland sailor posted to Victoria during the Second World War decided to spend his first leave in the United States. He encountered U.S. Customs at Blaine, Wash.

Customs: “Where are you going, sailor?”

Sailor: “Jist over to the States, b’y, to chase the women and have a few brews.”

“Where were you born?”

“In Newfoundland, sar.”

Have you ever had a shore leave cancelled?”

“Yes, sar, once.”

“Where?”

“In France, sar.”

“Why?”

“The Germans occupied it.”
