C.A. Brodie of Mississauga, Ont., leads off this issue with a story that he puts in the naval setting of Halifax.
The destroyer’s company had just started shore leave and some sailors went promptly to barber shops. In one, a lieutenant occupied a chair next to a veteran able seaman. The former’s barber, finishing up, offered hair tonic.
“Lord, no,” the officer protested. “My wife would think I’ve been in a brothel.”
The AB’s attendant offered the same tonic.
“Sure,” said the sailor. “My wife’s never been in a brothel.”
