William Mills of San Diego, Calif., says that during the Second World War an ugly rumour once went around London that the pubs were going to close at least an hour earlier, at 9 p.m.

One regular was asked what he thought about such a change. He shrugged: “It’s O.K. by me. If a bloke’s not drunk by 9 o’clock he’s not even trying.”
