The first contingent of volunteers troops departs Quebec for the “splendid little war” in South Africa.

Canadian merchant ship Bic Island is torpedoed and sunk by U-624 in the North Atlantic. All of her crew is lost as well as the survivors she had picked up from the ships Sourabaya and Gurney E Newlin. Bic Island had been an Italian ship before she was captured by the RCN trawler Bras d’Or on June 10, 1940.

The west coast patrol vessel HMCS Galiano is wrecked in bad weather and lost with all hands while transiting Barkley Sound.

Canada’s 437 Squadron flies Red Cross emergency aid to Pakistan.

A Dakota aircraft crashes near Cape Perry, N.W.T. Eight Canadian Forces personnel are killed. It is the first fatal Royal Canadian Air Force/Canadian Forces Dakota crash in 20 years.

No. 444 Squadron is established at Lahr, West Germany.

Germany’s Afrika Korps begins its retreat from El Alamein, North Africa.
