SEPTEMBER 2, 1945: Japan signs an unconditional surrender, bringing to an end six years of war.
SEPTEMBER 3, 1943: The Allied invasion of mainland Italy begins.
SEPTEMBER 4, 1985: The first photographs of the wreck of the Titanic are released to the public. The ship sank in 1912 with a loss of 1,500 lives.

SEPTEMBER 16, 2003: Operation Peregrine ends. The operation saw 2,200 Canadian Forces personnel help fight forest fires in British Columbia.
SEPTEMBER 17, 1944: Commencement of ill-fated Operation Market Garden, a bold attempt by Allied forces to bring the Second World War to an end by crossing the Rhine using a combined airborne drop and armoured advance.
SEPTEMBER 18, 1987: The Superpowers—the United States and U.S.S.R. agree to reduce the number of their nuclear war heads.
SEPTEMBER 19, 1950: United States X Corps begins to encircle Seoul, South Korea. Communist forces flee as Eighth Army advances to the north and west.

SEPTEMBER 21, 1812: American forces raid the village of Gananoque in the Thousand Islands east of Kingston, Ont.
SEPTEMBER 22, 1944: After an abortive attempt to break into the Breskens Pocket on Sept. 13, the Algonquin Regiment is again badly damaged while attempting to gain access to the pocket via the Isabella polder.
SEPTEMBER 23, 1976: A fire on the British warship Glasgow kills eight.
SEPTEMBER 24, 1988: Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson wins gold in the 100-metre race at the Olympic games in Seoul, South Korea. He is later stripped of his medal after testing positive for anabolic steroids.
