Letters From Bill – Friday, March 3, 1944

Dear Mum, Dad, Sis and Jack the Commando:

….Things have been nice and quiet these last two days because the fellows were all out of camp both days. When there is no one running in and out, a fellow can get some work done….There hasn’t been an air raid for some time so we have been able to sleep in peace and quietness. Guess Jerry found out it was pretty expensive business coming over here. Had a letter from Johnny and he is back to work again…and I can well imagine he is plenty busy.  The bombers are going over here night and day and his job is to load them with bombs…. He sends his best regards to you all….

Merry left yesterday and in two weeks time he will be on his way to Canada. His leg was taken off at the right place so he said. He can wear an artificial leg and it won’t show at all. He never changed at all, just as happy as he ever was. The last thing he said to me was, ‘I will have a big steak and a dish of ice cream for you just as soon as I get back.’ Boy, I sure wish I were going with him….

Write soon and don’t forget a box or two. All the best in the world to the best folks a fellow ever had.

Lots of Love to All,

Pte. Bill
