In memory of Leonard Cohen.
In fall 2015, Legion Magazine and Leonard Cohen released a video to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. In a poignant tribute to McCrae, Canadian songwriter, painter and poet Leonard Cohen has recited that stirring poem for this exclusive video. His voice is accompanied by stirring imagery from the First World War.

In a public ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa today, dignitaries and citizens commemorated the tragic deaths of Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, killed a year ago this week in separate incidents.
At Rideau Hall prior to the ceremony, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, and Patron of The Royal Canadian Legion, was presented with the symbolic First Poppy of 2015 by Tom Eagles, Dominion President of the Legion. This set the stage for the Legion’s Poppy Campaign, which will get under way officially on Friday, Oct. 30.
In recognition of today’s events, Legion Magazine also today released a new video commemorating the 100th anniversary of the poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. How beautiful. What an amazing tribute to McCrea and to all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives in WW1, WWII, Korean War and all other conflicts where our soldiers have served with great courage and distinction.
Only Leonard Cohen could do Col. McCrea’s poem justice. I learned “In Flanders Fields” in public school many many years ago and to this day never get tired of hearing it.
