When Gen. Von Thoma surrendered to Gen. Montgomery in Africa, the tee-totalling Monty invited the German to dinner. A British MP took exception to such fraternization and asked Winston Churchill for his view. Said Winnie: “My sympathy lies with Von Thoma for I, too, have dined with Gen. Montgomery.”
