W.L. Cope of Niagara Falls, Ont., sends a story that he says was making the rounds early in WW II.
On the evening of the day war was declared, RAF bombers flew to Berlin to drop leaflets urging the Germans to reconsider.
All the planes returned safely despite Marshall Goering’s boast that nothing could penetrate Berlin’s defences. Except one, which was posted as missing. Two weeks later, the missing aircraft landed at its base in England. The squadron commander naturally demanded an explanation. After all, he said, they had only been dropping leaflets.
“Dropping leaflets,” the pilot exclaimed. “We’ve been taking them round door to door.”
