Some but, alas, too few servicemen kept diaries during the war. Thank heaven Robert Rae of Toronto did because he sends us his diary entry for March 10, 1945, which noted a story circulating on the Nijmegen front.

A German officer, bitter about being captured by Canadian soldiers, shouted:

“We understand the Poles fighting – they thirst for revenge. We understand the English – they fight from a sense of duty. But you Canadians come 10,000 miles to fight for souvenirs.”
