Brock Cummings of Prescott sends this and says he won’t swear to its truth:
A magician was entertaining aboard a troop-ship. He put a black cover over a cage that contained a parrot and promised, with a flourish, to make the parrot disappear. As intoned his magic words and waved his wand, a torpedo hit the ship, which sank.
The magician and others were in a lifeboat when the parrot came floating by on a board. “That’s a hell of a good trick” said the parrot, “but what did you do with the boat?”
