During the Korean War, the Canadian destroyer Athabaskan was caught in a typhoon in the China Sea.  A sailor was washed overboard but by one of those great strokes of good fortune, the next wave carried him alongside at brow height.  Another sailor reached out over the rail, grabbed him with both hands and yanked him in.

Among the rescued sailor’s first words were: “Where do I report for swimming lessons?”
