Find-Share-Discuss: Mary Carmichael Photo

Cover Girl

Mary Carmichael of Lakefield, Ont., shares a couple of photos, including the cover of the July 1943 Legionary, which was renamed Legion Magazine.

Carmichael says the photos coincide with her service in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps, from 1943 to 1945. Following a band tour she was stationed at Headquarters Pacific Command, in the CWAC recruiting office in the old Vancouver Hotel. Back then she went by her maiden name: Mary Patterson. The group photo—taken in 1943—shows Lance Corporal Mary Patterson (right) and Lieutenant Naomi Prentice (seated) signing up four new recruits. “In spite of the war, these pictures represent a very happy time in my life,” recalls Carmichael. We thank her for contributing to Find-Share-Discuss, and invite other readers to share similar memories of wartime or peacetime service.
