Calgary school to commemorate Capt. Nichola Goddard

A new  school in Calgary, Alta., will bear the name of  Capt. Nichola Goddard,  the first female Canadian soldier killed in combat.

The Calgary Board of Education  says the new school will be built in the Panorama Hills community, in the city’s northwest.

Captain Nichola Goddard School will accommodate students in Grades 4-9. In its announcement, the board said Goddard believed that her service would prepare the way for others to build a better life, specifically through education.

Goddard, 26, was serving with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Afghanistan in 2006 when killed during a firefight.  She is the first female combat soldier killed on the front lines and the first Canadian woman to be killed in action since the Second World War.
