The Night In The Trenches 2013 – Brittny

“Each year Eaglesham sends students out to stay a night in the trenches, and holds a ceremony the next day. I have personally never gone into the depths to experience what those so long ago did, but I have wanted to. I think the experience gives us a deeper insight and appreciation towards those who fought for us, and we truly understand some of what those men did to protect us and bring us the peace that we so badly need. No, we will never truly understand their sacrifice, and will never feel what they felt, but by going out there in a dark hole, in the icy bite of the night, under the stars, in a brief moment of complete silence, those choice few got a brief glance into another world, dark and dangerous, hidden and forbidden, and then they understand. That is why the trenches are so good. For one night they get to live in the past. For a single night, they get to live in a memory.”
