Military Moments: Battle of Beaumont-Hamel

“Every July 1, while the rest of Canada
celebrates the birth of a nation,
Newfoundlanders mourn their
losses in the Great War, and
especially those at Beaumont-Hamel.”

To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Beaumont-Hamel, Legion Magazine and Gordon Pinsent tell the story of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment’s tragic advance at Beaumont-Hamel on July 1, 1916. Legion Magazine’s new web series is called Military Moments. The video revisits the assault at Beaumont-Hamel which saw the Newfoundlanders all but wiped out in only 30 minutes by Germany. Narrated by proud Newfoundlander and Canadian screen legend Gordon Pinsent, Legion Magazine recalls the sacrifices of the soldiers, placing the events of Beaumont-Hamel into the context of the Battle of the Somme and the greater war.

Can someone tell me what piece of music is playing at the end of the video?

Nearer, My God, to Thee – a 19th century hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, later set to music by her sister Eliza Flower. I’ve used this haunting piece of music in some of my own CWGC videos.
