Letters From Bill – Friday, March 31, 1944

Dear Mum, Dad, Sis and Jack the Commando:

Here I am again folks but I don’t know how long it will be before the next one is on the way. Tomorrow we leave on the scheme and we don’t know if we will be back here or not.  Today we had a kit inspection and everything we didn’t have had to be replaced today, that is everything that is Army issue. I was lucky and was only minus a couple of things but got them replaced. They told us to get rid of all our personal stuff and that is what I did. I sent my camera, flashlight and a few other things up to Mrs. Hardie; they said they wouldn’t mind a bit if I sent my things there.

It took me three hours to get my stuff packed and even now I haven’t got it all in my kit bag and packs. The hardest things to carry are the cigarettes but I sure wouldn’t leave them behind. It looks impossible to put all that stuff in the few things we have but after a stiff fight it can be done. Don’t know what I will do if I get a whole bedroom again, can’t figure out where to put everything to fill up space.

They told us we may not come back to this camp so your guess is as good as mine. This is probably the buildup to the real thing. From now on we will probably be living off the country and that certainly doesn’t appeal to me. Can’t just say what we will be doing but will let you know. I will try and write as often as possible when we are out but it will probably be tough.

There was a show on at the “Y” tonight, put on by a cast of Canadians but I couldn’t go because I had to get my things packed. From what the fellows say who were there it was darn good.

Lots of Love to All,

Bill
