F.D. Allen of Gravenhurst, Ont., says that when the war in North Africa was being fought, training camps for desert warfare were established.

At the end of one of the initial courses, trainees were asked by the officer in charge what they considered the key first step for survival in the desert.

One prompt reply: “A transfer to the navy.”
