J.W. Thwaites, a WW I machine-gunner with the 107th Bn. from Winnipeg recounts that soon after the capture of an enemy trench he picked up a fancy pair of salt-and-pepper shakers in a dug-out. At the next cook up of bully beef he produced the shakers for just that added touch of gourmet dining.
After a few mouthfuls he felt sick and was taken to the MO, who demanded to know everything he had eaten. It was the MO who discovered that the salt-and-pepper shakers were filled with lice powder. It wasn’t long before the story got around how Bill Thwaites was taking lice powder inside as well as out.
