C.F. Waite of Simcoe, Ont., says that a Canadian veteran on a visit to Britain was riding in a train compartment with a young man and his deaf father.
“Have you been to Britain before?” asked the young man.
“Oh yes, I had a swinging time here during the war, especially in London.”
The old man spoke up: “What did he say, Reggie?”
“He says he was in London during the war…Did you ever visit the Rose and Crown?”
“A wonderful pub, I spent a lot of time there.”
“What did he say, Reggie?”
“He says he visited the Rose and Crown…And did you ever know a barmaid named Martha Winterbottom?”
“I sure did. She’s why I had such a swinging time in London.”
“What did he say, Reggie?”
“He says he knows mother.”
