The first contingent of returning Nile voyageurs arrives in Halifax. Taken into service in 1884 to guide a British expeditionary force up the Nile River, the Canadian boatmen had a vital role assisting in the effort to relieve a besieged British garrison at Khartoum, Sudan.

03/4/1943
While escorting convoy KMS-10 to the Mediterranean during the buildup for the invasion of Sicily, Escort Group C-1, including His Majesty’s Canadian ships St. Croix and Shediac, detects an enemy sub. The result is the sinking of U-87.

03/5/1943
Canadian and British bombers begin a major offensive against Germany.

03/5/1953
Soviet leader Joseph Stalin is reported as being gravely ill.

03/6/2002
Nearly 130 Canadian combat troops are sent to Afghanistan. The soldiers, part of 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, are based at Kandahar. They will participate in the ongoing search for terrorists and their hideouts. Joining the PPCLI are 21 Canadian Forces personnel from Canadian Forces Base Kingston, Ont., who will become part of a communications detachment.

Lieutenant-General Guy Simonds outlines plans, titled Operation Blockbuster II, to capture Xanten. The German town is captured within three days.

03/7/1969
Israel elects its first female prime minister, Golda Meir.

03/8/1982
The Canada Act is passed. This Act of Parliament, passed by the British Parliament, ends British legislative jurisdiction over Canada. Queen Elizabeth II signed the proclamation in Ottawa on April 17.

03/8/1985
A car bomb explodes in Beirut, Lebanon, killing at least 45 people and injuring many others.

03/9-10/1952
The 25th Brigade repositions itself along the Sami-chon River in Korea.
