A 10-metre Japanese incendiary balloon bomb is found on a farm south of Regina.

Missile sites and aircraft command-and-control centres are targeted by British, French and American fighter jets in a series of bombing raids over southern Iraq.

A 160-kilometre-wide strip along the coast of British Columbia is defined as a “protected area” and a curfew is imposed for every person of Japanese origin.

While on convoy escort duty, HMCS Port Arthur sinks Italian submarine Tritone off Bougie, Algeria. The ship’s crew shares a $1,000 prize from the community of Port Arthur, Ont.

20 January 20 2004
Some 2,000 Canadian troops leave CFB Valcartier, Que., for Afghanistan.

21 January 1975
HMCS Assiniboine rescues eight crew from a merchant ship foundering off Nova Scotia in a daring Sea King high-line transfer.

22 January 1949
WW I ace and WW II squadron leader Frederick McCall dies. From 1939 to 1969, the Calgary Airport was named McCall Field. 

23 January 1943
No. 164, RCAF, is formed in Moncton, N.B., as Canada’s main wartime transport squadron. Postwar, it trained crew for Air Transport Command.

24 January 1978
Soviet reconnaissance satellite Kosmos 954 re-enters the atmosphere and crashes near Great Slave Lake, N.W.T. Debris, including radioactive waste, is scattered across 124,000 square kilometres (see page TK).

25 January 1951
HMCS Cayuga and Nootka are the first Canadian ships fired on in the Korean War. They retaliate by obliterating shore batteries at Inchon.

26 January 1924
An order-in-council authorizes the Canadian Red Ensign to fly over government buildings in Canada and abroad.

27 January 1987
Colonel Sheila Hellstrom is promoted to brigadier-general, becoming Canada’s first female general.

28 January 1986
Space Shuttle Challenger explodes after liftoff from Cape Canaveral, Florida. All seven astronauts on board are killed, including teacher Christa McAuliffe.

29 January 1944 
Canadians Lucien Dumais and Raymond LaBrosse launch Operation Bonaparte in France, one of the most successful escape networks of the war.

30 January 1991
In the Battle of Bubiyan, two CF-18 Hornets strafe and damage an Iraqi patrol boat.

31 January 1862
The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada is organized in Montreal as the 5th Battalion, Volunteer Militia Rifles.
