Letters From Bill – Thursday, March 23, 1944

Dear Mum, Dad, Sis and Jack the Commando:

…Last week we got some reinforcements who have just arrived overseas so that takes down the number of zombies (conscripts) over there. We can always tell if they are on active service or not by their number. If there are six or seven numbers in their regimental number they joined up as zombies; if there regimental number has only four or five numbers they joined active.  The fellows who have been over here for two or three years sure hate them and they don’t take long to show it.

We have been having air raids every night now but London is getting the full blast. I wish you could see these new rocket guns in action, they look like a real Halloween display.  Did you see in the papers where the whole south coast of England was put “out of bounds.”  That means something so it won’t be long now I bet. There hasn’t been any more news about our moving but it seems quite probable…. When and if we do move I won’t be able to write so often but will every chance I get. There are thousands of Yanks around here now so I have a pretty good idea what they are here for….

All the best in the world to the best folks a fellow ever had. Hope to see you soon.

Lots of Love to All,

Bill
