John Barber of Georgetown, Ont., contributes a London blitz story:

An old lady’s home was hit and demolished, except for some built-in cupboards under the stairs. The fire brigade dug her out and she appeared shaken but otherwise unhurt.

A fire warden looking for a stimulant to give her found a bottle of brandy in one of the cupboards.

“Here, mother, have a nip of this,” he said.

“You leave that bottle alone,” she cried. “I’m saving that for an emergency.”
