Some troops were stationed at an old country manor in England that boasted a swimming pool, though it was full of stagnant water from wartime disuse. Vehicles were being cleaned for the commanding officer’s inspection and a young soldier filled a bucket from the pool.
An old sweat shouted at him: “Don’t take it out of the shallow end. Get to the deep end; there’s more water there.”
The soldier poured the water back into the pool, walked around the other end and refilled his pail.
