Stanley Scislowski of Windsor, Ont., says each man on bivouac with the advanced infantry training camp had to spend at least one night on guard duty, with an unloaded rifle. The guard was instructed never to relinquish his rifle, but a favorite trick of young officers was to ask to inspect the guard’s weapon. The man who complied was severely dressed down.

One trainee handed over his weapon on request and the officer asked: “Now, what would you do if I were the enemy?”

In a flash, the trainee whipped out his Webley revolver: “This one’s loaded and that one isn’t. Give it back.”

Sheepishly, but hastily, the lieutenant handed the rifle over and nothing more was heard of the incident.
