We have a naval story, from Dave Galbraith of Cobourg, Ont.:
On a certain Canadian warship, the wheel-house and the bridge, where the ship was controlled from, were a few decks apart. A voice pipe connected them.
A freshman sailor was at the helm and a young sub-lieutenant on the bridge. Communication was poor and the lieutenant called down, demanding: “Who is the idiot at the end of this pipe?”
A mild voice returned from the wheel-house: “Which end, sir?”
