“My grandfather, George Henry Robertson, served with the 6th Field Company of Canadian Engineers where he performed skilled labour on the battlefield and supervised infantry and other troops in the construction of trenches, roads and field fortifications,” writes James H. Robertson of Victoria, B.C.

James says his grandfather crossed to France in September 1915, and served in France and Flanders until the Armistice in November 1918. “I am very proud to share with you this glimpse into my grandfather’s military service.”

We thank James for sharing these photos with us. The postcard, which was addressed to George’s future wife Susie Lynch of Annapolis Royal, N.S., shows a steam engine or tractor pushing through the floods on Salisbury Plain, England, in 1915. The other photos show tents being taken down on Salisbury Plain, and trenches or field fortifications in France. The portrait was taken in 1918 in Vancouver.

We invite other readers to submit photos of wartime or peacetime events to Legion Magazine’s Find-Share-Discuss website feature.
