I remember most of what you wrote about. It was the reason I joined the Canadian Forces in 1968. Also my grandfathers fought in WW 1 and my Dad in WW 2 was one of the reasons I joined.

I'm surprised that your love of "playing" war and collecting cards and comic books didn't lead to playing board wargames. As a kid in the 70's I watched war movies, read comics such as The Haunted Tank, and Sergeant Rock, and played was with my toy schmiesser machine pistol. At the age of 9 I discovered a whole new world in the form of board wargames such as Richthofen's War where I went up against Allied Sopwith camels in my Fokker Triplane, or re-fought the War of 1812, or charged cemetery hill with my Confederate forces at Gettysburg. All these various board wargames helped me to not only see how history turned out, but also how history could have turned out but for a different decision or combat result. My fascination with war and history took me to University, and most recently lead me to leading tours of the WWI and II battlefields that Canada fought on in Europe.
