Corby Spirit and Wine

Proud Official Partner of the Royal Canadian Legion

With Canadian roots dating back to 1837, Corby – like the Royal Canadian Legion – has been part of the most important moments of our country’s history that have made Canada today.

After military service in the 1837 Rebellion, our founder, Henry Corby, sold his bakery and bought a St. Lawrence steamer. Soon enough, he was making his own brand of whisky for local consumption and incorporated the distillery operation in 1859. Following Confederation in 1867, he became a member of the provincial parliament for East Hastings and passed on the business to his son, Henry Corby II, in 1881, who was later appointed to the Canadian Senate in 1912.

War changed our business, and the distillery suspended normal operations to dedicate itself to the war effort, producing alcohol for munitions both in the first and second World War. Following the end of World War II, the international distilling industry began a period of consolidation that has continued to the present day. Canadian troops returning from Europe had acquired new tastes for imported spirits and wines.

In 1969, the Company was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and still is under the trading symbols CSW.A and CSW.B.

Today, Corby Spirit and Wine Limited is a leading Canadian marketer and distributor of spirits and imported wines based in Toronto, Ontario. With approximately 21% of spirits sales in Canada, our premium portfolio includes many of the top-selling brands in our country. Corby is also, since 2005, affiliated with Pernod Ricard S.A., a global leader in the spirits and wine industry.

When should you ask about home healthcare?

For seniors who want to live independently in their own homes – and thousands of Legion members certainly fit that description –having the right support can make all the difference, enabling you to live a full and rewarding life. But when is the right time to reach out for that support?

Many seniors wait until they’re faced with a crisis or a medical emergency – a fall, a sudden illness or a surgery from which recovery would be difficult or impossible on their own. They may not realize that getting the right support in the first place can mitigate the risks of more serious incidents. Others seek help in advance of serious need – they just want help with meals and housekeeping or perhaps a bit of companionship from time to time.

Whether the need is urgent or preventative, making the decision to get help can be a challenging one. Anthony Milonas, Chief Operating Officer from We Care, one of Canada’s leading national homehealth care companies, says there are two big questions to consider: When is the right time to consider getting help? and Who should you turn to?

“If you are having difficulty with mobility and are at risk of a serious fall,” Anthony says, “you should likely consider getting help. The same goes for seniors who are confused about their medications or who have difficulty managing their households.” He adds that seniors recovering from a medical crisis without support may face especially high risks.

As to the second question – who to turn to for help – Anthony says, “Assuming you need professional help, it all boils down to trust. Look for a care provider who, like We Care, is approved by Accreditation Canada – the same group that certifies Canada’s hospitals and other healthcare organizations. Be sure they offer a breadth of services to handle all your care needs – for today and tomorrow.”

Does it matter that We Care is a major supporter of Legion activities and programs? “We think so,” Anthony says. “It shows an understanding and commitment that, we hope, is meaningful to Legion members.”

We Care is a national provider of home healthcare services with offices serving over 800 communities all across Canada.

An exclusive offer for Royal Canadian Legion members: receive a 10% discount off We Care services*

Ewen McInnes discovered the story of his great-great uncle Robert. When Ewen came across an old photo of a British naval officer, there was a note on the back from his great-grandmother that read, “My brother, Robert McInnes. Killed in action. War 1914-18. 18 years old.” Other than the photo, details about Robert’s time in the military were unknown and his story remained a mystery until Ewen performed a search on

While exploring the Soldiers of the First World War enlistment records he discovered that Robert McInnes had been assigned to the 2/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry. The record indicated that Robert had then been discharged from the Yeomanry and transferred to the “Royal Naval Division.”

Able Seaman Robert McInnes joined the Howe Battalion of the Royal Naval Division on September 1st, 1917. He was killed in action on October 26th, 1917 – the first day of the Second Battle of Passchendaele.
