When should you ask about home healthcare?
For seniors who want to live independently in their own homes – and thousands of Legion members certainly fit that description –having the right support can make all the difference, enabling you to live a full and rewarding life. But when is the right time to reach out for that support?
Many seniors wait until they’re faced with a crisis or a medical emergency – a fall, a sudden illness or a surgery from which recovery would be difficult or impossible on their own. They may not realize that getting the right support in the first place can mitigate the risks of more serious incidents. Others seek help in advance of serious need – they just want help with meals and housekeeping or perhaps a bit of companionship from time to time.
Whether the need is urgent or preventative, making the decision to get help can be a challenging one. Ewen McInnes discovered the story of his great-great uncle Robert. When Ewen came across an old photo of a British naval officer, there was a note on the back from his great-grandmother that read, “My brother, Robert McInnes. Killed in action. War 1914-18. 18 years old.” Other than the photo, details about Robert’s time in the military were unknown and his story remained a mystery until Ewen performed a search on Ancestry.ca.
While exploring the Soldiers of the First World War enlistment records he discovered that Robert McInnes had been assigned to the 2/1st Lanarkshire Yeomanry. The record indicated that Robert had then been discharged from the Yeomanry and transferred to the “Royal Naval Division.”
Able Seaman Robert McInnes joined the Howe Battalion of the Royal Naval Division on September 1st, 1917. He was killed in action on October 26th, 1917 – the first day of the Second Battle of Passchendaele. Inspired by his discovery, Ewen plans to visit the battlefields of Passchendaele and pay his respects to his great-great-uncle Robert.
